Rexferd West

Rexferd West passed away peacefully in his home Thursday, October 22, 2020.

He was born in Rupert, Idaho April 20, 1931 to Ralph West and Mary (Mae) King. He grew up on a farm and attended school in the Springdale area. He graduated from Seminary in 1948 with high honors. then graduated from Burley High School in 1949.  He attended Utah State Agriculture College-now known as Utah State University for a time.  He served a two-year mission  in the Western States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from November 1950 to November 1952. His mission then included Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and some of Kansas.  After his mission he married Doris Holyoak, in the Salt Lake Temple on December 1, 1952.   They lived in Burley, Idaho.  He served in the US Army, at Fort Bliss in El Paso Texas from August 1955 to August 1957.  He worked in the guided missile department as head dispatcher in the motor pool.  He returned to the Burley area, where he and his family lived in Star area, and then in Burley. He was employed laying carpet, hanging curtains, and blinds, for Lee’s Furniture and later also for Rupert Showcase. He was known for his honesty, and excellent work ethic.  In an accident in October 1962, just one month following his mother’s (Mary King West) accident and death, Rex suffered a concussion, crushed vertebrae and a shattered knee cap. Through the tender mercies and miracles of God Rex eventually regained the full usage of his leg, and never showed the slightest limp when he walked. He learned to use the carpet knee kicker with his left knee, crawled around on his knees every day and laid carpet for most of the rest of his career.

In addition to serving his country and his community, Rex served actively and faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter--day Saints. He was a humble and devoted follower of Christ all his life.

Rex’s most memorable service will always be as a faithful, and dedicated husband and father. He thought his greatest accomplishments were his children.  His wife, Doris passed away on March 6, 1999. He is survived by his children: Elaine Jensen of Spanish Fork, UT; Kevin West of Raleigh, NC; Karl West of Kayesville, UT; Kathryn(KD)  McCombs of Rupert, ID; Gary West of West Jordan, UT; Liana West of Burley, ID, and Cheryl Phillips of Loxley or  Rupert, ID, 41 grandchildren, and 82 great-grandchildren.

Due to COVID, graveside services will be for immediate family only. He will be buried at Gem Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are  under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home, 188 South Hwy 24 in Rupert.
