Luther McGill Jr. 89, passed away January 23, 2022, at his home in Burley. In his last years, Junior was a devoted husband helping care for his wife. After her death, he waited patiently for his "number to be called" so he could join her and loved ones who had passed before him.

Junior was born on December 18, 1932, the third son to his parents, Luther, and Ada Maude McGill. He grew up in Rupert, Idaho with his parents and five siblings. He had fond recollections of his childhood and his mother and father. In April of 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served until his honorable discharge in 1955. Jr. was proud of his service in the Army and spoke of it often.

From a young age, Junior was a hard worker. That attitude and diligence continued upon his return from the service where he hauled hay and potatoes. It was during this time that he met Mayna Meline, an employee at the Unity Store. What started as a daily purchase of a soda or snack, turned into a first date at the county fair, followed by nearly 62 years of marriage. Luther and Mayna were married on December 5, 1959, in Elko, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on March12, 1991. Together they raised three daughters and one son.

While raising his family, Junior worked for the J.R. Simplot Company processing plant, eventually becoming the production manager, a position he held for many years. He was a reliable, hard-working employee and supervisor that made many friends along the way. Upon retirement after 39 years, Junior worked a couple of part time jobs to stay busy. Junior was not only a respected man professionally, but his family thought highly of him as well. His steady demeanor and consistency nourished and guided his children. He was always the first one to take hold of grandbabies and provided endless hours of rocking. He was rightfully known as the “baby whisperer." As his grandchildren grew, he was a great supporter, attending games or other events they were involved in. He had a gift for showing up for his family and others in ways that truly counted. Junior knew how to tell a story and make others chuckle with a quick-witted joke. He thought it was important to make people laugh. Junior lived a purposeful life and fulfilled his role of being a devoted husband and son, caring father and grandfather, honorable worker, and good friend.

Junior is survived by his children Carrie Chappel, Steven (Jenny) McGill, Lori (Sam) Yoshida, and Lisa (Clint) Goss, 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren (with another on the way), and many nieces and nephews.

Junior was preceded in death by his wife, Mayna; two granddaughters, Stacy Ercanbrack and Bethany Tolle; his parents; three brothers, Inman Edgar, William Wayne, and James Arthur McGill and two sisters, Doris Jensen and Lois Kowitz.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 31, at Morrison Funeral Home, 188 Highway 24, Rupert, Idaho. Burial will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery.

A viewing for friends and family will be held Sunday, January 30, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, 188 South Hwy 24 in Rupert

Whenever Luther would see us in the yard he would pull into the driveway and take time to visit, and ask about our wellbeing and the family. We could feel his concern for us as a friend and neighbor. And of course, his departing words would be "I HAVE A FUNNY JOKE FOR YOU…' and we will always remember his hearty laugh that we would share together. Thank you McGill family and prayers/peace to all!

I had THE great pleasure of seeing a young couple, newly married. So In love, and so inseperable. I was 14 yrs younger , than uncle jr. We lived in Boise and had made our yearly vigiil to rupert. I was so anxious to see uncle jr and his new bride, however he could have cared less about anyone but his new bride, Mayna. They were living with my grandparents, and was constantly disappearing and giggling. I could not understand this new invasion that had taken my uncle away. I have relived that memory often. It has put a smile on my lips many times, just thinking of it. I knew when my aunt Mayna died, her groom would soon follow. Love to you Uncle Jr and aunt Mayna, and to the family you have left behind.

REST IN PEACE WITH HONOR AND GRATITUDE.
