Mary Maxene Wiley, 92, of Rupert, Idaho, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 23, 2016, in Burley, Idaho.

Mary was born in Jordan Valley, Oregon on May 28, 1924, to Charles William and Esther Edna (Woods) Deakins. When she was four her family moved to Midvale, Idaho. She attended grade school and high school there, graduating high school as valedictorian in 1941. She continued her education at the College of Idaho in Caldwell and Mercy Medical Hospital in Nampa, Idaho where she earned a degree in nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1945.

Mary married Wendell L. Dullea in 1946. He was killed in a crop dusting plane accident in 1948 in Ontario, Oregon. She worked as a registered nurse in Ontario before marrying Robert F. Wiley in 1951. They moved to Midvale, Idaho where they ranched for many years. During that time Mary worked as head nurse at the Council, Idaho hospital. In 2002 they sold their ranch and moved to Rupert, Idaho, Robert passed away in 2004.

Mary was a loving, compassionate and always willing to help others. People loved to be in her presence. She was physically active, a fabulous cook, and made her home an enjoyable place for family, friends or anyone who dropped by the ranch. She loved spending time with her family. She requested a celebration of her life on her 90th birthday so she would be able to participate and enjoy the celebration with family and friends, in lieu of a funeral. What a wonderful celebration!

She was musically talented and shared her gift by singing and playing the piano on many occasions. She loved to write poetry and wrote the following:

"MY LAST DAY"
"I think if this were my last day, I would want to spend it with the people I love the most. I would want to assure and reassure them that nothing they have ever done or ever could do would sever my love for them. No problem or disagreement would be worth holding on to, I would just want to enjoy giving them enough love to sustain them after I was gone." "Mom (2010)"

Mary is survived by her four daughters: Deanna Wiley, Logandale, NV; Wendy (Steve) Bott, Rupert, 10; Marcia (Dave) McClure, Pahrump, NV; Carol Allen-Sides (Jim). Yakima, WA.; Ten Grandchildren and thirteen Great-grandchildren, with one on the way; A sister, Arlene Gatewood, Portland, OR; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Charles William and Esther Edna (Woods) Deakins; both husbands, Wendell Lee Dullea and Robert Franklin Wiley; an infant sister, Beverly June Deakins; and brother, David Dean Deakins. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Intermountain Homecare & Hospice in Burley, the staff at Autumn Haven Assisted Living in Rupert for their many years of care and love shown to Mom, the staff at Pomerelle Place in Burley for the care given Mom during the past several weeks, and to our friend, Mark, at Morrison-Payne Funeral Home.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mary Wiley. I never met her, only her daughter Deanna who spoke highly and lovingly of her. She was a talented person who shared her gifts with her children and community.  May god bless and comfort the family at this time of loss.  May you find ways to carry on her legacy.

Dearest family,
I just read this mornIng of the passing of your dear mother. My heart rejoices, knowing she is with HER HEAVENLY father. But my heart is sad for your loss. She was a talented loving mother, wife and friend. Deanna, Wendy, Marcia and Carol. I have fond memories of you and times spent at each others homes. Church times,  I was baptized on the same day as your mother. Our families were great friends. My love and prayers go up for peace, and for God to cradle you in his arms as you experience this time of loss and sorrow.

So sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. It has been a long time since we have been in touch with Mary after she moved to Rupert from the ranch in Midvale.  Your mom and dad were always wonderful neighbors, and remembering fond memories of them both.  Love and prayers from the Pomeroy families.

A smile comes to my face as I remember your very lovely talented mother. I remember wonderful times at your house as a child and pleasant conversations with her later on as a neighbor.
Our thoughts are with you girls at this time of great loss.

It's unfortunate that slowly, inevitably, we lose wonderful people like Mary. She was like a mom when I was working at the ranch in the '70's, she served plenty of food, did laundry for me…and here is a laundry tale: I lost the sole off one of my boots in thick mud (peeled it right off) and since the summer was more than half-way over, I figured instead of buying new boots or paying a repair bill for getting a new sole put on, I would "fix" it and make do for the rest of the summer. The "fix" involved a sole cut from an old tire and the front half was fastened to my boot with brads. The back half? Well, it was loosey-goosey, and every day I would bind it on with baling twine. That left some room for chaff and foxtail-like weeds to work their way into the heel of the sock, which went into the laundry pile. She always let me know what a bother it was for her to pick those things out of the sock. (she was a saint, she deserved better.)
She wasn't just a cook-and-laundry gal, though. (as is obvious from her academic accomplishments in her life story.) Ha! I remember her driving the Willy pick-up that pulled a hay wagon while we filled it up, and, oh my!, attending to the puncture wound of a hay hook on a posterior.
One of my fondest memories of her was her hospitality to Dean and Ethel Jessup and I when we went down to Rupert for a visit. After the long drive down, she fed us with baked potatoes and meatloaf that was fit for royalty…And fortified us with coffee for the journey back. That's the kind of person she was, worth a long drive for a short visit.
Girls, your mom and dad were topnotch.
