Garth Ross Greenwell, age 72, previously of Oakley, ID, passed away on November 30, 2017 in Pocatello, ID.

He was born in Burley, ID on December 31, 1944 to Ross and Helene Greenwell. He grew up in the Mini-Cassia area and attended schools in both Burley and Minico. He graduated from Minico in 1963. He attended college at Idaho State University where he met the love of his life, Cynthia Richardson. He joined the United States Air Force and after returning from boot camp was married on October 24, 1964 in Pocatello, ID. He served 4 years in the military, one of which was served in Udorn, Thailand during the Vietnam War. While serving in Thailand, his first son Troy was born. Upon his discharge from the military, they moved back home and eventually made their lifelong home in Oakley, ID.

Garth spent his working years in the beautiful rock quarries of Oakley. He owned his own heavy equipment business and enjoyed working outdoors. After he retired, he continued working part time doing various projects with his equipment for the local farmers and ranchers. In retirement he enjoyed traveling including spending many winters in Arizona. He had a passion for going on wagon train trips throughout the West in his own custom made sheep camp with matching mules. Most of his time was spent with his grandkids going to football games, rodeos, wrestling matches, dance recitals or anywhere his grandkids might be.

 

Garth was a very giving and charitable man and loved to serve others. He served as the Mayor of Oakley for 8 years as well as several terms on the City Council. He volunteered for the Oakley Fire Department for over 20 years. He was the Scout Master for many years and had an amazing record of success helping boys receive their Eagle Scout, including his own two sons. He served numerous years on the Oakley Vigilante’s and was president of the organization for years. He participated in a medical mission to Peru alongside his two sons to provide medical aid and supplies to those in need. He and his wife also fostered many kids in their home providing them with the love and support that they needed.

He is survived by his wife Cyndi and their children; Troy Greenwell, Nick Greenwell and Marnie (Cameron) Smith; his brothers Morris (Kelly) Greenwell, Jeff (Leslie) Greenwell and his sisters Marlene (Phil) Coban, Gayle (Paul) Mauzey, and Terri (Art) Smith, as well as 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Morrison Funeral Home on Tuesday night, December 5th from 6 to 8 pm. Address is188 South Hwy 24, Rupert, Idaho.

Funeral services will be held at the Oakley LDS Stake Center on Wednesday, December 6th at 11 AM, with additional viewing hours from 10 AM to 11 AM at the church. A graveside service will be held immediately after the funeral at the Oakley Basin Cemetery. Military rights will be given.

The family has asked in lieu of flowers to please make donations to Idaho State Veterans Home. Mail checks payable to Idaho State Veterans Home and send to: 1957 Alvin Ricken Drive, Pocatello, Idaho. 83201, mention "In Memory of Garth Greenwell". Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home in Rupert.
