Van Edwin Helms, 60, Burley and former Oakley resident, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Park View Care Center in Burley. Van fought a courageous battle with cancer. Van had the support of his family at all times during this battle. The last goal Van had was to live longer than his father, which was accomplished.
Van was born on August 15, 1955 in Burley, Idaho, to Forrest Austin and Donna Joan Asher Helms. Van joined his sister, Sherrie, and the family spent many years in the Oakley Valley. He attended and graduated from the Oakley High School.
Large equipment and driving trucks were among Van's favorite things to do. He was employed in several different jobs and most of them included driving trucks. He was always a friend to everyone he met. He wanted people to be happy at all times. He brought many smiles to children at Christmas with a visit from Santa.
Family time was important to Van. He loved spending time camping, fishing, going on ATV rides or just taking a ride to the mountains. Watching a movie or playing games with nieces, nephews and cousins were also among the enjoyable times.
Van is survived by his sister, Sherri (Dale) Martin, Burley, ID., nieces: Kalyn Weeks, Burley; Teresa (Derrick) O'Dell, Kimberly; Irene (Gary)Miller, McCool, NE; Great Nieces & Nephews: Alec (Tara) Helms and children (Shandei, Rhyker, Quinan and Taycer) Morenci, AZ; Brandon (Miranda) Weeks and daughter, Anyslie, Williston, ND; Cameron (Savanna) Weeks, Burley; Raymond and Tyler O'Dell, Kimberly, ID; Jared Miller, Ashley Reynolds, York, NE.; Alicia (Cody) Rempel, Jackson McGraw, Henderson, NE. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Leona Helms, many aunts and uncles and cousins. He leaves behind a very dear friend, Elaine. Elaine brought Van many happy moments at Park View Care Center. Van was preceded in death by his Father, Mother, maternal grandparents, Bill and Lois Asher and paternal grandfather, Theodore Austin Helms, several aunts and uncles and cousins.
We will miss Van's infectious laugh and humor; however we are glad his suffering has come to an end. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Park View for the great care they provided for Van during his stay there. It was his home.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Oakley Stake Center. Urn placement will follow in the Marion Cemetery in Oakley. Services are under the direction of Morrison Payne Funeral Home 321 East Main Street in Burley.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be given to the Rupert Elk Lodge P.O. Box 453, Rupert, ID, 83350 to be donated to the Betty Heist Cancer Research in Van's name.
