Elsie Jane (Neiwerth) Bartley, 84, of Burley, passed away Friday, October 25, 2019 at home following a short illness. Elsie was born July 5, 1935 in Rupert to George and Barbara (Kroskob) Neiwerth, Sr. She graduated from Rupert High School in 1953.

After high school, Elsie lived in Baltimore, MD and Sacramento, CA, but moved back to Rupert to begin her education as a nurse. She was among the first graduates of the licensed practical nursing course through Minidoka Memorial Hospital in 1960. This training allowed her a livelihood while she moved to different cities around the country, working as an LPN in Flagstaff, AZ, Phoenix, AZ, Richmond, VA and Needles, CA.

In 1977, Elsie returned to Rupert with her family. For the first several years back, she worked at the family-owned Y-Dell Market in Burley, earned her realtor license, and was the school librarian for Paul Elementary School for a few years. Eventually, she returned to nursing and worked at several area healthcare facilities. It was only fitting that she retired from nursing in 1998 at the place she started, Minidoka Memorial Hospital, as the night shift nurse in the extended care wing.

An avid reader for much of her life, but especially after retirement, Elsie shared her love of reading with students at Heyburn Elementary School as a volunteer with the Foster Grandparents program. She spent several hours each week preparing materials and working with kids for five years from 2003-2008.

Elsie was always very proud to be a resident of Rupert and a part of the Mini-Cassia community and enjoyed all of the hometown festivities, especially during Independence Day since it was so close to her birthday. Her family, both immediate and extended, were very important to her and she took great pride in everyone’s accomplishments and was always supportive of their endeavors.

During her early years, Elsie attended the First Congregational Church of Paul with her family. While living in Portland, OR she attended, and was baptized at, Central Bible Church and then attended Paul Baptist Church after moving back to Idaho.

Elsie is survived by three children, Debra Hilterbrand of Burley, Richard Hilterbrand, Jr. (Denise) of Rupert, Barbara Fetters (Mark) of Happy Valley, OR and one sister, Linda Richan of Burley. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Travis Hammond (Misty), Kimberly Freiburger (Josh), Kelli Gale (Trent), Daniel Fetters, Joy Fetters, David Fetters, Rachel Fetters, and nine great-grandchildren, Jhett Hammond, Saylor Hammond, Kaydn Bohon (Marissa), Clayton Bohon, Kierra Edwards, Madysn Gale, Tala Freiburger, Cub Freiburger, River Freiburger.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters (Rosemary Becker, Lucille Wakewood, and Irene Neiwerth) and three brothers (George Neiwerth, Daniel Neiwerth, and Herbert Neiwerth).

At Elsie’s request, no funeral services will be held. Internment will be at Rupert Cemetery. Cremation services are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home, 188 South Hwy 24 in Rupert.

I worked with elsie as my nurse at Minidoka Memorial Hospital. Just out of high school as a cna in the extended care wing. Elsie, alongside the other wonderful ladies on night shift took me under their wings and showed me how to be an excellent cna. I always respected elsie for her patience, humor, kindness & sarcasm. Many great memories.
